Yankees Begin New Journey For 27th Championship

“You feel history every time you walk into Yankee Stadium … Twenty-Six World Championships … There are signs all over the place … When we run into Yogi Berra in the clubhouse, that’s 10 Championship rings right there … Think about that for a minute — 10, just as a player … I won four in my first five seasons here, and I thought that was the only way it could be … It’s actually pretty hard for most guys to even get one title.”

“Right now, I do what I can to help the Yankees get that next Championship … Everyone expects us to win, and we expect no less of ourselves … With the Yankees, whether it’s the fans, the front office, the owner, whatever, we’re held to the highest standard … Nobody’s tougher on us than we are on ourselves.”

“I consider myself fortunate to have spent my whole career in pinstripes … When I’m old and retired, I’ll probably look back on this time here, and go, ‘wow’! that was really something.”

… New York Yankees “Captain” Derek Jeter, 2004

Jimmy, I’m sorry the season didn’t start out on a high note for the Yankees! It is only the first game! My guys got rained out and will try again tomorrow. And no matter how hard I tried 😉 Scott still left Boston a Yankees’ fans! I am just so very glad that the ‘battle’ has begun again and FINALLY we are playing the ball that counts! Have a great night and YES! We have baseball!

Jimmy, I just tried leaving a comment but it wouldn’t go through. So I’m trying again. Sorry in advance if I come up twice. I wish today’s opener had gone differently for the Yanks, but it was not to be. So frustrating because I thought we might mount a late charge.

Yanks will be fine. Everyone knows this was an aberration for C.C. Wang will do great, we’re winning the series.

Jeter has always been a classy guy. Somethings don’t change. Hope the Yogi Berra is still talking to the guys – he seems to mean the world to them. I still think it would be nice to see you guys win the Home Opener when that day arrives next week! It would be a nice touch to the new digs.

I hope that Jeter can rally these guys to again believe in themselves to the point of making a serious challenge to the division.
I saw the heads down a bit yesterday after the last out of the game. There will never be a team that will go 162-0, but to see a few heads go down when you only fell to 0-1 was a bit unusual.
CC takes time. But maybe they forgot to tell the Yankees fans that before the season 1-5 last year might be a good indicator that the guy is like a bowling ball and gathers momentum during the year.
You guys will be fine. One game doesn’t define a season in the first week. Best thing about yesterday’s dream, the polish is off the apple and optimism can still ring true for 2009.

Nicely put, Raysrenegade. I am not remotely worried about my Yankees. They’ll be more than fine, they’ll be great.

    April 8, 2009 …

Many thanks to everybody who offered comments on my above post … All your thoughts and kind words are greatly appreciated !!!
    .
It was not a great opening day of the new 2009 baseball season for the New York Yankees [the hitting was okay; the pitching was not very effective] … But, there are 161 games remaining; it’s a long season; and, it should be a fun race for first place in the AL East … Also, it will be a fun season throughout all of baseball !!!
    .
Everybody, enjoy the rest of the games of the opening series’ of your favorite teams !!! …
    — My responses will follow as I see some very light snow flurries outside my window here in the Bronx !!!
    — Have a great day, everyone !!!

Thanks, again, for all your comments …
    .
    * Julia: I wish the first Yankees game vs. the Orioles was also rained out … But, it is a long season, and the Yankees will be fine !!! … Nice 5-3 win by the Red Sox against the Rays on their opening day … Josh Beckett pitched a solid seven innings of two-hit ball while striking out ten batters … Great start for the Sox and all of Red Sox Nation !!!
    .
    * Jane: Yeah, CC and the Yankees bullpen were not very effective [at all] in the Yanks 10-5 loss to the Orioles … It was good to see Posada and Matsui hit homers, and Jeter get three hits … But, pitching is the key for Yankees success this year … [I hope CC is not injured after seeing him with the heating pad in the dugout in between innings] !!!
    .
    * Shortporch: CC Sabathia didn’t have command of any of his pitches — resultng in zero strikeouts while allowing six runs, on eight hits, and five walks in 4.1 innings of work !!! … Not what all us Yankee fans expected … But, CC always has a slow start [Teixeira also always has slow starts] … My main concerns from game one: CC using the heating pad in between innings; and, the ineffectiveness of the bullpen !!!
    .
    * Letsgoyankees: I agree, CC and the Yankees will be fine … We need solid starting pitching and great performances from the bullpen this season, especially, perfect work from our middle relievers, so the Yankees can hand these games over to Mariano Rivera to close out our victories !!!
    .
    * Bob: Well, we will see which is the magic number, #27 or #8, at the end of this year !!! … But, you are right about CC Sabathia — he did pitch a lot of innings in 2008, especially wth the Brewers … It will be interesting to see if all that work from last year will affect his performance in 2009 and in future seasons !!! … Nice 5-3 win by the Sox in game number one !!!
    .
    * Elizabeth: Thanks for the nice words about Derek Jeter !!! … He is a true Yankee with all the “class”; “greatness”, and “leadership” qualities of all the past New York Yankee “greats” !!! … Regarding CC Sabathia? … Well he didn’t have a good fastball, and didn’t have any command of most of his pitches … I really hope he does not have an injury that caused his ineffectiveness in his first start !!! … Great 5-3 victory for the Red Sox in game one vs. the Rays !!!
    .
    * Canuck: Derek Jeter is certainly continuing the great New York Yankees tradition with as much “class” as Yogi Berra and all the “all-time” great Yankee players !!! … Yogi Berra’s constant presence around the Yankees is very valuable to the team … Yogi is the “Gold Standard” (10 World Series rings) !!! … I also would like to see the Yankees will their “Home Opener” on April 16th, in addition to 95-100 games this season !!! … A victory on “Opening Day” at the new Yankee Stadium would be perfect !!!
    .
    * Rays Renegade: Derek Jeter is the leader of the New York Yankees, on and off the field !!! … He always tries to keep the Yankees in each and every game — and, makes it known he does not like players who “give-up” … Jeter gives 100% all the time, and he expects that same effort from all players on the team !!! … Regarding CC and Tex: they both have a history of starting off slowly each season … But, I am confident both will be fine, as well as, confident that the Yankees will be fine, and have a great year in 2009 !!!
    .
    * Babu: It is a long season with 161 games to go, and if both CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira have the kind of season we all expect, then, I think CC can win 20+ games and the Cy Young Award; and, Tex will hit over .300 with 40+ homers and 125+ RBI’s, earning him the MVP Award !!! … The ball looks like it was carrying really well in the new Yankee Stadium during the two games vs. the Cubs; so, I look forward to the Yankees playing a full season at the new ballpark !!!
    .
    * Letsgoyankees: Perfectly said … “the Yankees will be more than fine, and they’ll be great” in 2009 !!!
    .
    * Neal07 / William: Those Championship totals sound good to me !!! … I’ll sign-up for at least four World Championships over the next eight years by the New York Yankees !!! … Numbers: 27, 28, 29, and 30 … look like very nice numbers indeed !!! … “Go Yankees” !!!
    .
Take care, everybody; and, thanks, again for your comments !!!
    “Have A Great Day” !!!

    Weather Update …

The brief sight of a very few snow flurries here in New York lasted only about 20 minutes and have now ended !!! … The sun is out, but it is still partly cloudy; and, it is kind of weird that we even had any snow flurries because it’s about 45 degrees !!! … Oh, well !!! … Jimmy [27NYY], “BY&L”
