Should Yankees Trade Bobby Abreu For “Nothing” ?

Yes, I know, Bobby Abreu is now a free-agent. But, if all reports [so far] are accurate, then it looks like the New York Yankees are planning on “NOT” re-signing Abreu, thus, allowing Bobby to walk away from New York, leaving a major hole in the number “three” spot in the Yankees lineup.

In my view, if this great error of misjudgement by the Yankees braintrust takes place, the result would be the same as if the New York Yankees traded Bobby Abreu for, “nothing in return”.

“Follow the money” on this one, because that will be the only reason a foolish move such as letting Bobby Abreu walk away from the Yankees will be made. I can see the headlines now, “Money Talks, as an All-Star Walks” !!!

Over the last four years, Bobby Abreu has played in an average of 157 games each year, delivering averages of: 170 hits, in 587 at-bats, for a .290 batting average. Those numbers also produced an average of: 106 runs scored; 19 homeruns; 102 RBI’s; 99 base-on-balls; 272 Total Bases; and, 27 stolen bases, each season.

In addition to Abreu’s .290 BA, Bobby has a .460 Slugging %; and, a .390 On-Base%, over the last four years.

Hank and Hal Steinbrenner have stated recently that the New York Yankees will be heavily involved in the free-agent market, and will spend whatever money is required to bring the best players to New York to improve the team, with the ultimate goal being to win our 27th World Championship in 2009; and, also, future World Series victories.

Since money does not seem to be an issue in the minds of the Steinbrenner family, [and, money shouldn’t be an issue in any deal the Yankees consider]; then, money should not be an issue in regards to keeping Bobby Abreu in “pinstripes”.

Abreu has earned a new “three-year” deal because he is an all-star, and one of the best players in the “game” today. Bobby always hustles, is well liked by his teammates, and is a great team player, who is a fan favorite  — intangibles that are priceless !!!

Also, Bobby Abreu wants to stay in New York as a part of the Yankees Organization.

So, to me, it is very clear …

George, Hank, Hal Steinbrenner, and Brian Cashman, “RE-SIGN Bobby Abreu” !!!

    Jimmy,
With the draft picks the Yankees would receive for Abreu signing elsewhere it’s only for “next to nothing.” Still something I would not like to see happen.

    Hey, Robert …

Yeah, we are in total agreement … I will not be happy if the Yankees let Bobby Abreu walk away from the Yanks … It just doesn’t make any sense to me !!! … Abreu will hit .300; with about 20 homeruns; 100+ runs, 80+ base-on-balls; 100+ RBI’s; etc. … The Yankees are making this decision based only on “MONEY”, and I think this will be a terrible mistake … There aren’t many players in the Majors that put up the numbers that Abreu does each year … Why would any team let a player like Bobby Abreu “just walk away”??? … I really do not understand this move, especially, because, I feel the Yankees should “never” let “money” be an issue in any deal they are considering !!! … Hopefully, the Yankees will sign Tex and CC this weekend; and, maybe, change their mind regarding Abreu, and somehow work out a deal that will bring Bobby back to the Yanks for the next three years !!! … Take care, Robert !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

You can always count on a productive season out of Bobby Abreu. Those stats, above all, show consistancy. Manny playing in New York, would not be a right fit, especially after all those years of him producing/making a fool of himself, for Boston against you guys. Abreu has become a, “what you see is what you get player,” after his power numbers decreased leaving Philly; however, he probably might come close to them again if he hit in that ballpark.
Hope you get him back Jimmy!

    Hi, Jeremy …

You mentioned a couple of “key” words about Bobby Abreu that are very important … “consistancy” and “productive” !!! … Also, like you said, Abreu is a “what you see is what you get player” … He can be counted on [each year] to hit about .300, with around 20 HR’s, and 100+ RBI’s; while walking 80-90 times, and scoring 100+ runs !!! … I think Bobby Abreu is the perfect “number three” hitter in the Yankees lineup, and he will be greatly missed if the Yanks let him walk away … Finally, I totally agree with your thoughts about Manny Ramirez … “Manny is just not right for the Yankees, or playing in New York” !!! … Thanks for your support regarding the Yankees bringing Bobby Abreu back !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

    Hi, Joe …

I do think Bobby Abreu has earned being signed to a new 3-year deal; and, will get many offers from other teams for 3-4 years, in the range of $45-60 Million … But, since Abreu “wants” to stay in New York with the Yankees, maybe he will accept a “two-year” deal, with an option, in the range of $30-35 Million [plus, the option year] … I would be happy with those numbers, and, also, staying with the New York Yankees !!! … The Yankees have the “money” to spend, and really should “never” let money be an issue when making decisions on players they are interested in signing … In my view, Bobby Abreu is worth every dollar the Yankees have paid him, and he should be rewarded, and re-signed for all his efforts … I just do not understand the Yankees “braintrust” thinking on this matter !!! … Take care, Joe !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

    Hey, William [NMYF] …

Yeah, if the Yankees re-sign Bobby Abreu, they will be set with Abreu in rightfield, and Nady in left … Then, in Spring Training — Johnny Damon, Melky Cabrera, and Brett Gardner [and, now, Nick Swisher] can battle it out for the centerfield position, and the 4th outfield position … I do think, though, Damon is really better in leftfield, but I do want Nady to play “full-time” in left … Maybe, Damon will be traded? … And, we really do not know if Melky, Gardner, or Swisher are the solutions in centerfield … Each of those “three” have different qualities to offer the Yankees, but have yet to prove if they can be the “everyday” centerfielder !!! … So, to me, it makes sense to re-sign Bobby Abreu, who along with Nady, will give the Yankees two solid hitters in the “everyday” lineup, as well as, having rightfield and leftfield set in 2009 !!! … Take care, William !!!

    Hey, Jason …

It’s good to see you here for a visit !!! … I agree with your comments … It would be okay with me if the Yankees re-signed Bobby Abreu to a two-year deal, with a team option — I think it’s very important for the Yanks bring Bobby back !!! … Abreu adds a lot to the Yankees lineup: getting on base; hitting for average and power; scoring runs; and driving home many runs … Also, Abreu is a great teammate, and “wants” to stay in New York with the Yankees !!! … I totally agree with your thought at the end of your above comments when you said, “I still think Abreu can and will produce” … I really think that is the key, the fact that Bobby Abreu can always be counted on to deliver “big” numbers in the number three spot in the Yankees lineup … It would be a major error if the Yankees let Bobby Abreu walk away from the Yanks … Take care, Jason !!! I know how you’ve been hoping Abreu would stay, Jimmy, but I just don’t see it happening. It’s all but settled that Nady is the new right fielder, so where does that leave Bobby? If he’s not signed, I’ll certainly miss him.

    Hi, Jane …

Yeah, I know, based on all reports up to this time, it looks like the Yankees do not want to re-sign Bobby Abreu … I just do not understand the Yankees thinking regarding Abreu !!! … If there is any player who deserves to get the money he is asking for, that player is certainly Bobby Abreu … If the Yanks let Bobby walk away, he will be greatly missed, as well as, his .300 BA; 20 HR’s; and 100+RBI’s !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]
