Abreu And Pettitte Almost Totally “Out The Door”

“… we chose to go a different direction; not offer arbitration …” — Brian Cashman

Well, “arbitration day” final arrived, and the above quote says it all. The Yankees had eight players eligible for arbitration and decided not to offer any of these players that option. As Cashman said, “we [the Yankees] chose to go a different direction”.

Bobby Abreu … Andy Pettitte … Jason Giambi … Chad Moeller … Ivan Rodriguez … Sidney Ponson … Carl Pavano … and, Mike Mussina [retired], are the “eight players” that may not get a chance to play in the “new” Yankee Stadium, unless they return with some other team. Of course, really seven players, since Mussina has retired.

The Yankees will miss Bobby Abreu and Andy Pettitte the most if Brian Cashman, and Hank and Hal Steinbrenner, let them “just walk away from the Yanks”. It is very disturbing to even imagine the Yankees letting “money”, of all things, get in the way of bringing back two players who have contributed so much to the team in their time in the Bronx; and, have so much more to offer — Pettitte for at least one year; Abreu for two or three years.

Cashman also said in his statement …

“… Bobby was a Type ‘A’, and Andy was a Type ‘A’, so the determination that we made today was to make sure that we control what amount we’d be spending, at least in the event that we’re fortunate enough to bring those players back” … “We did not want to put ourselves in the position of having that determined by a third party without knowing what the figure would be” … “We just wanted to control the cost that we would allocate for every position on the club” … “By offering arbitration, we would lose our ability to at least determine a final cost” … “We chose to go a different direction; not offer arbitration, and we’ll still stay engaged with the entire free agent market including those two players.”

The Yankees decision to not offer arbitration to the above eight players is very clearly “all about money”. And, in my view, “money” should not be an issue in regards to bringing  back Bobby Abreu, Andy Pettitte; and, also, Chad Moeller, who did a fine job in his role as the third catcher, backing-up, and even starting, when injuries shut-down Jorge Posada and Jose Molina at various times last year.

With the $80 Million that the Yankees will save with the departure of: Giambi; Ivan Rodriguez; Ponson; Pavano; and, Mussina; as well as, the expired contracts of: Abreu, Pettitte, and Moeller, the Yanks can now condense that total into the signing of: Bobby Abreu, Andy Pettitte, and Chad Moeller.

The Yankees will be a much stronger team if they start their free-agent signing spree by offering Abreu a “three” year / $45 Million deal; Pettitte a “two” year / $25 Million deal; and, Moller at least a “one” year deal. At least start the process, and make these players an offer.

Then, top all other teams in the pursuit of Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia.

It has been estimated, that the New York Yankees are worth about $1.5 Billion; the Yes Network about $3.5 Billion; and, the new Yankee Stadium will “virtually” have a license to “print” money starting in 2009. So, for the Yankees braintrust to “nickel and dime” all those Millions of Dollars is really ridiculous. The Yankees “have” plenty of money; so, a payroll in the range of $225 Million should be very comfortably manageable by the New York Yankees Organization.

It’s time for Hank and Hal Steinbrenner to step up to the plate, and “court” all these free-agents, just as their father, George M. Steinbrenner, III, did, with free-agent players such as Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson in the 1970’s.

Mr. Steinbrenner always knew, “it takes money to sign the top free-agent players on the market”.

Hopefully, this successful, winning philosophy will be continued by Hank and Hal, starting with the signings of: Mark Teixeira; CC Sabathia; Bobby Abreu; and Andy Pettitte — this winter.

The Yankees have enough money. Why didn’t they offer arbitration to Abreu.
    This offseason, I would sign:
    Abreu
    Texeira
    Lowe
    Burnett
    Trade for:
    Peavy
    Trade Away:
    Matsui
    Kennedy

    Yeah, Jane …

I still hold out hope that the Yankees will somehow come to their senses and offer Bobby Abreu some sort of a deal … I think an offer of: 3 years / $45 Million is a very fair offer for a player like Abreu who will deliver: .300 BA; 15-20 HR’s; 100+ RBI’s; 100+ runs; and, 85-90 base-on-balls … Maybe, Bobby would accept a “two” year deal in the range of $28M – $30 Million … But, there are reports that the Chicago Cubs may be interested in Abreu … So, we’ll just have to “wait and see” what will happen !!! … The thing that really gets me annoyed about the whole Abreu and Pettitte situation is the fact that the Yankees are willing to let both these very valuable players walk away from the Yanks “only because of money” !!! … I just do not agree with the Yankees approach; and, truly believe it will be a “major” mistake if the Yanks do not re-sign Abreu and Pettitte !!! … Jane, thanks for the visit !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

    Hi, Babu …

Thanks for the visit !!! … I agree with all the moves [listed in your comments] that you want the Yankees to make this winter, except, trading Matsui … I think, if healthy, Matsui will have a great year in 2009, batting at least .300, with about 25 HR’s, and 100+ RBI’s … This is the last year of Matsui’s contract, and, maybe, the last year he will play for the Yanks … So, I really hope he stays healthy all year, and plays well, at the plate, and mostly as our DH [also, some games in LF] … Also, I don’t think the Yanks will be able to sign all three pitchers you have listed [Lowe, Burnett, Peavy] … But, if they can sign at least one of them, or make a trade for Peavy, then that would be great !!! … And, yes, I agree, “the Yankees have [more] than enough money”, and should pay whatever it takes to sign as many top free-agents as possible … I also think, they should sign CC Sabathia !!! … Anyway, thanks for the comments; and, thanks again for your visit to my blog … I did visit your blog the other day, and will be sure to check out your blog [again] on a regular basis … Take care !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

I was really surprised when the Yankees did not offer arbitration to anybody… I thought at least one person, but nope. Abreu is really important, even though you guys have a lot of outfielders, he’s definitely the best one offensively. Even though Petite went 14-14 (I think… not sure) he’s still a great pitcher, and, as you suggested, could give a good one-two years.

    Hi, Elizabeth …

Yeah, I really think the Yankees should have already re-signed Bobby Abreu and Andy Pettitte … This whole situation should not have even reached the arbitration stage !!! … Pettitte is still capable of delivering 175-200 innings pitched, and 15-17 wins, for the Yanks; and, Abreu will hit in the range of .300, with 15-20 HR’s and 100+ RBI’s … So, those are “big” numbers that have to be replaced by the Yankees !!! … The upcoming “Baseball Winter Meetings” should be very interesting … Now, its just wait and see !!! … Have a great day, Elizabeth !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

    Jimmy,
When I saw that the Sox had signed Traber, I looked up his stats and I was surprised that Theo would sign someone who was so unreliable. Thankfully it was a minor league deal though, so we won’t be blowing too many games. And I agree with you, it would be a HUGE mistake for the Yankees to let Abreu and Petite walk, they are two very valuable players and important parts to a successful team.
And I’m with you with not voting for Mark McGwire… I think using steroids or performance enhancing drugs of any type are a disgrace to the beautiful tradition of baseball. To be honest, I still consider Hank Aaron to be the home run leader, because as far as I know, Bonds used steroids to get to that point, so it’s invaild in my book at least.
Also, regarding Pete Rose and his whole gambling scandal. Sure, gambling is a horrible thing to do.. it’s pretty bad to bet on your team and all, but still, he was an AMAZING player, so in my opinion at least, I think he should be in the hall of fame.

    Hey, Elizabeth …

I will always consider: Babe Ruth the “greatest player”, and “greatest homerun hitter” ever; Ted Williams the “greatest hitter” ever; and, Hank Aaron as the all-time leader in homeruns [as of the year 2009, in Aaron’s case] … Barry Bonds may have great all-time numbers; but, because of his “Steroid” and “PED” use, he has disgraced himself and the Game of Baseball … I also agree with your opinion, Elizabeth, regarding Bonds and Mark McGwire not being enshrined in the Hall of Fame … McGwire and Bonds are the biggest names [along with other so-called great players] of the “Steroid Era” … All these “PED” players have distorted many of baseball’s cherished all-time records, and all-time stats; and, there should be some price to pay for these disgraceful actions against Our Great Game Of Baseball … Not being voted into the Hall of Fame, is the “price” these players should have to pay !!! … As for Pete Rose, well, I do agree he was one of the greatest players ever to play the game [all-time hit leader, etc.] … But, Rose admitted to betting on Baseball games !!! … In the history of the game, going all the way back to the “Black Sox Scandal”, fixing of World Series games, in 1919, “gambling” almost ruined the Game of Baseball !!! … Gambling is very serious, as it challenges the integrity of Baseball, and, any Sport; and, for this reason, I think, Pete Rose should not be in the “Hall of Fame” … I really believe, Rose falls in the same category as the “Steroid Era Players” … Also, I think, Shoeless “Joe” Jackson should be inducted into the Hall of Fame, before Pete Rose is given any future consideration !!! … But, who knows, at some point in the future, all, [or, some], of these “tainted” players may be voted into the “Hall of Fame” — it’s all in the hands of the Baseball Writers [who have the vote] !!! … Finally, regarding, Billy Traber: the Red Sox should not expect too much from Traber … And, yes, it will be a big mistake if the Yankees do not re-sign both, Andy Pettitte and Bobby Abreu !!! … Thanks for the great comments, Elizabeth !!! … Jimmy [27NYY] … http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

It does seem strange that the Yankees would suddenly be concerned about money. Is the expense of the new stadium too much for the team to handle? You would have thought that they would have offered at least one of them (Abreu or Pettittee) arbitration. It would seem now that they could lose them both and not get anything in return. So much for the new “ownership” of the Yankees. It appears they might be headed towards a tough season. Good luck!

Hey, Joe … Thanks for stopping by !!!

At this point, if Bobby Abreu returns for one year, I would be happy .. The simple fact is, Abreu is better than “all” the current Yankee outfielders, and it makes no sense [at all] to just let him walk away … And, Joe, I agree, if the Yankees offered Abreu arbitration, at least they would get a couple of draft picks in return if he signs with another team … It seems, the Yankees braintrust is overlooking Abreu’s .300 BA; 100+ Runs; 100+ RBI’s; 15-20 HR’s; and, 85-90 base-on-balls; and, they haven’t given any indications on how they “truly” plan on replacing Bobby Abreu’s numbers !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

Hi, Julia … Thanks for the visit !!!

In the past, Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, made all the decisions. And, “everybody” knew who as running the team and organization — “The Boss”, Mr. Steinbrenner !!! … And, we also knew, he would not let money get in the way of the Yankees signing the best players, period !!! … I know the Yankees “plan” is to go into the 2009 season, and future years, with their young prospects; but, they have many question marks, especially, their starting rotation, first base, and centerfield … Money is really not an issue for the New York Yankees, so this whole approach by Brian Cashman, to “cut” the payroll, and not reward, and re-sign players, such as, Pettitte and Abreu, who have produced great numbers for the Yankees, and are still very capable of continuing to deliver similar numbers over the next couple of years, is very puzzling !!! … I do think, without: Mark Teixeira; CC Sabathia; Bobby Abreu; and Andy Pettitte, the Yankees may be, as you said in your above comments, Julia, “headed towards a tough season”; especially, if the Red Sox sign Teixeira; and, Sabathia signs with some other team !!! … Julia, thanks, again, for the visit, and your comments !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

    Thanks, Elizabeth …

You have an excellent mlblog, so it was great to see your blog listed at #23 on the latest “Leaders List” !!! … Yeah, the 2009 Baseball Season will be here before we all know it, and I def look forward to all the Yankees vs. Red Sox games … I like to call the great Yankees vs. Red Sox rivalry, “A Season Within A Season”, as those games always take on a special “playoff atmosphere” … So, the new baseball season can’t arrive soon enough for me, and I think all baseball fans !!! … But, first, the “Baseball Winter Meetings” starting next week [12/07 – 12/11] … Hopefully, we will see a lot of action [trades, free-agent signings, and other baseball deals] at these upcoming Meetings !!! Take care, Elizabeth !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

    Yeah, Elizabeth …

Finally, we should see some serious baseball action at the upcoming “Baseball Winter Meetings” [starting: Sunday, Dec, 7 to Thursday, Dec, 11th] … I think, after the first major signing, [hopefully, CC Sabathia, signing with the Yankees], there will be a “flurry” of many other free-agent signings !!! … And, yes, the thoughts of “spring training” are very happy thoughts indeed !!! … The Yankees and Red Sox play only two times this upcoming “spring” — Friday, March 13th at Ft. Myers; and, Tues, March 24th at Tampa Bay … So, both those games are something to look forward to !!! … Then, we can look forward to the first Yankees vs. Red Sox series in the 2009 regular season: April 24-25-26, 2009, at Fenway Park !!! … Elizabeth, “Enjoy Hot Stove League” !!!
